In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on June 2, 1999, Don Janke, at that time the president of Internet Ventures, Inc. (IVI):
"asked that the FCC allow conventional Internet Service Providers to compete with cable access providers by invoking the leased access clause.
"'Don't regulate the Internet out of the video programming business,' Janke said. 'Your decision will open or close the Internet's access to compete, with cable's program services, as Internet Video Programmers. IVPs will either thrive or stagnate based on your decision.'"
You can read more about this in a December 16, 1999 internet.com/ISP-Planet article by Patricia Fusco entitled "IVI Pitches Last Ditch Effort For Leased Access," and subtitled: "Plea hinges on ISPs' role as video programmers. Meanwhile open access movements take root in more U.S. communities."

A precursor to Etopia Media's Broadband over Power Line World interviewed Don Janke in his Hermosa Beach, California, office on June 4, 1999, two days after he sent his letter to the FCC. Through the wonders of digital recording and playback technology, you can hear that interview now as though it had been recorded yesterday.
