On July 21, 2005, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), an investor-owned utility that is part of the Sempra group of companies, announced that, starting September 1, 2005, it would be testing broadband over power line (BPL) technology on its system, to determine its suitability as a tool for the management of various internal network functions.
