National Biodiesel Board CEO Joe Jobe discusses President Bush's "biodiesel event" and provides biodiesel backgrounder

President Bush supports alternative energy strategies as a way to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil
President George W. Bush appeared today at the Virginia BioDiesel Refinery in West Point, Virginia, and spoke to an enthusiastic crowd there about biodiesel and alternative fuel sources as an integral part of a strategy to make the United States less dependent on foreign sources of oil.
You can read the official White House transcript of his speech about biodiesel and other renewable energy sources by clicking here.
In attendance at that event was Joe Jobe, CEO of the National Biodiesel Board, the national trade association representing the biodiesel industry as the coordinating body for research and development in the United States.
Later in the day, Mr. Jobe participated in a phone interview with Biodiesel World in which he talked about the President's presentation at the Virginia BioDiesel Refinery event and, more broadly, about the technology and economics of biodiesel in the United States and worldwide.

What is biodiesel?
Biodiesel (mono alkyl esters) is a cleaner-burning diesel fuel made from natural, renewable sources such as vegetable oils.
How is biodiesel made?
Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called
transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the fat or vegetable oil. The process leaves behind two products -- methyl esters (the chemical name for biodiesel) and glycerin (a valuable byproduct usually sold to be used in soaps and other products).
Biodiesel is typically produced by a reaction of a vegetable oil or animal fat with an alcohol such as methanol or ethanol in the presence of a catalyst to yield mono-alkyl esters and glycerin, which is removed.
