As reported recently
here, the State of Rhode Island General Assembly has passed a bill legalizing medical marijuana for state residents, and the governor, Donald L. Carcieri, has vetoed it.
Representative Slater, the principal author of
2005 – H 6052, "The Edward O. Hawkins Medical Marijuana Act.", spoke with
American Politics Today a few minutes ago, at 10:00 pm local (Eastern Daylight) time, Thursday, June 30, 2005, to tell listeners that the Rhode Island State Senate had voted, 28-6, to override Governor Carcieri's veto of the medical marijuana bill.
"We are half-way there. All we have to do is wait for the House to override and it will become law in the State of Rhode Island," Representative Slater said.
Due to a crowded House calendar and the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, Representative Slater said he expects that House override vote to take place next week.
