The San Diego Telecom Council's mission is, in its own words, to focus "on developing and cultivating awareness of the region's telecommunications and information industry, as well as its unique environment for entrepreneurs, by providing a forum for exchanging industry knowledge and promoting local telecom industry goals."

Its sponsors include such companies as QUALCOMM Incorporated, Motorola, Inc., Nokia, SAIC, LG InfoComm, Inc., Cooley Godward LLP, Ericsson Wireless Communications, Deloitte & Touche LLP, Ernst & Young LLP, KPMG, Kyocera Wireless, Latham & Watkins LLP, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Siemens Corporation, SignOnSanDiego.com, Silicon Valley Bank, Texas Instruments, and Verizon Wireless.

Julia Wilson was recently promoted to the position of CEO of the San Diego Telecom Council, stepping up from the job of executive director, in which role she had served during the past four years.

Responding to a recent inquiry from Broadband Wireless Access World concerning the position of the San Diego Telecom Council in regard to the emerging trend towards municipal broadband, under which cities would offer their residents broadband Internet access services, and the simultaneously-emerging counter-trend towards legislating it out of existence, Ms. Wilson prepared and sent to Broadband Wireless Access World a statement setting forth the Council's position on this question.

Here's what she said:

"[T]he SD Telecom Council represents companies working in both the wireline and wireless space.  We support companies in WiFi, WiMax, DSL and cable, all working diligently to bring broadband access to the end user, whether that is the enterprise or the home.  Cities should have the right to build, deploy and operate those systems that will provide ubiquitous, cost effective service to residents.  Some solutions are wireless and others may be a combination of both optical networks and wireless equipment.   The Council supports municipal broadband in whatever form it takes."
