Don Berryman, Executive Vice President, Earthlink
Don Berryman is Executive Vice President at Earthlink, a leading Internet service provider and one of the three finalists in the competition to build the city-wide Wireless Philadelphia infrastructure.
Broadband Wireless Access World spoke today with Mr. Berryman about his company's muni-broadband solution, which combines Earthlink's core competencies with Wi-Fi radios from Tropos and backhaul from Motorola's Canopy.
He also talked about the political aspects of municipal broadband, saying that he expects some kind of compromise to emerge later this year or next in the U.S. Congress between forces supporting Texas Congressman Pete Session's bill allowing states to prohibit municipalities from building muni-broadband networks and a competing bill from U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and John McCain of Arizona which prohibits states from prohibiting municipalities from building municipal broadband networks.
