Introduction

If daily journalism is the rough draft of history, then a compilation of daily reports on the broadband wars, with links to audio interviews of the main characters in those wars, is a second draft.

That's what you're got here: a compilation of 150 or so articles, featuring audio interviews, covering recent and on-going efforts (extremely well-funded and heavily-staffed) by incumbent telecommunications carriers (telcos, RBOCs, Baby Bells, splinters of AT&T, one of which [SBC] has announced its intention to take its progenitor's name, along with cable companies, aided and abetted by politicians they own (not excluding FCC commissioners and U.S. Supreme Court Justices) to dominate the provision of broadband Internet access at the expense of independent ISPs and great U.S. cities and the millions of present and future Internet users who live there, and the countervailing attempts by these users to hold their own and expand the zone of Internet self-determination.

If the incumbents succeed in their quest for national domination, U.S.-based Internet users (businesses and individuals both) face a future of limited choices, higher prices, and possible infringements on their ability to distribute and/or access timely and accurate news and enlightening cultural content, especially when either category might tend to undermine the hegemony of the duopolist masters of the Internet provision space.

Coming battles in Washington, D.C., may well determine whether or not U.S. Internet users have access to a world-class competitive broadband platform, how many of them have that access, and under what terms and conditions and at what price they will have that access.

Reading the texts and listening to the audio interviews collected below will give you, as a reader and listener, a lot of the background required for a thorough understanding of the institutions, personalities, and issues involved in today and tomorrow's broadband wars. Use them while you can.
