Pasadena skyline with City Hall
The City of Pasadena, located northeast of downtown Los Angeles, is not only the scene of the best known New Year's Day parade (the Tournament of Roses), but also the home of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
As a way of providing Internet access to local and visiting Tournament of Roses spectators, in keeping with the high-tech orientation of the city as reflected in the presence of these premier technology institutions, as a way of encouraging economic development and providing affordable broadband access to underserved communities within the city, while enhancing the city's own internal communications capabilities, the City of Pasadena has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) asking bidders to offer city residents and businesses a citywide "wireless network that could be used by consumers, businesses, city departments, and third party retail wireless service providers."
The effect of implementing the winning proposal will be to create a citywide wireless zone covering the entire City of Pasadena.
