Speakeasy is, according to its own web site:
"a nationwide provider of broadband voice and data services. Since 1994, we have consistently earned customer loyalty by staying ahead of the technological curve and providing unparalleled service. As we enter our second decade as a broadband industry leader, our focus is on simplifying small business communications with voice and data solutions that improve performance and productivity."
As reported earlier this week, as it turns out, erroneously, at "Fon gets support from Google, Skype, Sequoia Capital, and Index Ventures; partners with Speakeasy," and elsewhere, the Spain-based company FON had reached an agreement with the Seattle-based Speakeasy regarding its "Linus, Bill, and Alien" plan to spread Wi-Fi connectivity worldwide.
In fact, there was and is no agreement of any kind between FON and Speakeasy.
This was reported two days ago in a posting by Glenn Fleishman entitled "Speakeasy Says No Deal with Fon."
Today, February 8, 2006, Broadband Wireless Access World spoke directly with Lynn Brackpool, spokesperson for Speakeasy, to get details about this mix-up and to talk about Speakeasy's own WiFi NetShare Service, which in some ways resembles the business model being proposed by FON, but is in no way connected with it.
You can learn more about Speakeasy's NetShare program, which, according to the Speakeasy web site, "allows you--the tech-savvy Speakeasy DSL member--to offer your neighbors broadband service via the new WiFi revolution. They get broadband service; you reduce your monthly fees," by clicking here.
