DRM stands for "digital rights management." DRM is a technology that allows the originators of documents or audio or video clips to control the terms and conditions ("policies") under which others can read, print, edit, listen to, or view the content of these files. Authentica is one leading company in this field. By the end of 2004, Adobe Systems, as referred to in the first interview below, will be releasing "Policy Server," a program that will enable the deployment of a system of DRM for text and graphics documents in the enterprise. And Microsoft says it will be adding DRM functionality to its Office suite, thereby potentially capturing most of the market that Authentica and Adobe have set their own sights on. Competition among these companies, and others, for market share in this emerging sector will be a focus of investigation and reporting here on DRM World.
