New Mexico State Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino

another step is taken toward impeaching George W. Bush

The Rules Committee of the New Mexico State Senate today approved Senate Joint Resolution 5 (SJR5), a joint resolution "petitioning Congress to commence the investigation of and impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney."

The measure was approved unanimously by the five Democratic members of this committee, enough to constitute a quorum for doing business, in the absence of the four Republican members of the panel, who boycotted the session.

The measure now moves on to the Senate Public Affairs Committee, where it is likely to be taken up sometime next week.

Supporters of this measure have until March 15, 2007, to see it through two more committees in the Senate, a floor vote there, committees in the House and a floor vote there, before the New Mexico Legislature adjourns.
