New Mexico State Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino

a skirmish on the floor of the New Mexico State Senate over SJR 5

On Monday, March 5, 2007, the Judiciary Committee of the New Mexico State Senate approved the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 5 (SJR5), a legislative resolution "petitioning Congress to commence the investigation of and impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney."

Yesterday, a motion to accept the report on this bill of the Judiciary Committee was under consideration on the floor of the State Senate. On a voice vote, the shouts of opposition to approving that report from Republican lawmakers seemed to carry the day, but then Majority Floor Leader Michael Sanchez noted the lack of a quorum and called for a roll-call vote, which is scheduled for today.

If that vote succeeds, the bill itself might be considered at that time, or put over until tomorrow.

You can listen to a discussion of these events, and learn more about the status of SJM 5, in a recently-recorded Impeachment Channel interview with Desi Brown, a staffer in the office of New Mexico State Senator and SJR 5 co-author Gerald Ortiz y Pino.by clicking on the appropriate "PLAY" button in the "3 impeachment line-up" on the Impeachment Channel, below.
