AB 719 would change existing law to allow the construction of nuclear power plants in California prior to the establishment of a facility for the storage of high-level nuclear waste
California Assemblymember Chuck DeVore, who represents the 70th Assembly District in Sacramento, has introduced a bill, AB 719, the “California Zero Carbon Dioxide Emission Electrical Generation Act of 2007,” which would change existing law to allow the construction of nuclear power plants in California prior to the establishment of a facility for the storage of high-level nuclear waste, such as the one being constructed at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
Assemblymember DeVore spoke at length and in detail yesterday with the Nuclear Power Channel about various issues surrounding the use of nuclear power in California, making his case in support of AB 719.
Today, the Nuclear Power Channel spoke with David Weisman, Outreach Coordinator for the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility, a state-wide, grass-roots, California organization that opposes the passage of AB 719, to get that organization’s point of view about this legislation and to hear its plans to oppose this bill in Sacramento next Monday, April 16, 2007, at a hearing of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee.
