the British consider adopting "smart passports," 2002

More than three years ago, on February 21, 2002, the BBC ran a story entitled "'Smart' passport plans mooted," in which "smart passports," electronic identification documents that "would allow us to link a person's identity to a biometric, such as an iris scan, facial recognition or a fingerprint" are discussed as possible "entitlement" cards, driver's licenses, and asylum seeker identification, as well as passports.


Germany leads the way in the adoption of "smart passports," 2005

On June 2, 2005, Royal Philips Electronics "announced that the German passport printing authority, the Bundesdruckerei GmbH, has selected on behalf of German Ministry of Interior its contactless smart card chip for use in the country’s smart passports."
