Terry Halberg at ITA updates the story

Unwired LA spoke today with Terry Halberg, Telecommunications Planner with the City of Los Angeles Information Technology Agency to update the usage situation for the City's Wi-Fi hot spot at the Braude Constituent Service Center in Van Nuys.

Mr. Halberg said that the Wi-Fi hot spot in Van Nuys was getting "pretty consistent usage," with "a little bit of increase" when the recent Van Nuys City Hall restoration was completed. There has been "no dramatic increase" in usage there, he said, with the site getting "around 1000 users a month," although he couldn't say if how many unique users were included in that total.

Mr. Halberg said that the trial deployment of free Wi-Fi in Van Nuys by the city was "a success" and said it was being used by a range of people from those with iPAQ Pocket PCs to ones using five-year-old laptops with recently purchased aircards.

He said that the service there was still free, and that discussions were still ongoing regarding a possible sponsorship model to support the operation.

Mr. Halberg referred a question about the impact of the trial deployment in Van Nuys on decisions regarding a city-wide deployment of Wi-Fi to the office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
